Why a friend’s recommendation still beats a thousand ads

For most of human history, commerce ran on relationships. You bought from the person whose work you had seen, or whose name a neighbour vouched for. Trust was local, earned and specific.

The internet scaled reach but flattened trust. A product’s visibility now depends less on whether it is good and more on who can afford to be seen.

Communities change the incentive. When a recommendation comes from a group you belong to, it carries information an advertisement never can. It has skin in the game.
